450 m of line, 72 m on the reel: check your RF4 capacity

Spool length, diameter, breaking strain and reel capacity are separate values. Three original RF4 screens show what to compare before buying.

Buying a long spool does not give your reel the same amount of usable line. Our RF4 guide to load and checking the entire setup explains why one specification is not enough. Apply the same care to metres: read line length and reel capacity separately. Here are the fields to compare before buying and after fitting the line.

450 m and 72 m belong to different fields

A line spool here means the separate item of line fitted to your tackle. The reel spool is the part of the reel that holds it. Line capacity states how much line of a specified diameter the reel holds. The length printed on a line item therefore does not describe the capacity of your chosen reel.

Original RF4 setup: reel capacity 0.58 mm / 72 m; line length 450 m and diameter 0.58 mm
Archived FishSoft original: the line item’s length and the reel’s capacity for the same diameter are shown separately. This is not a measurement after landing a fish.

In the full original setup image, the Zeiman ZM-4 Z60 says Line capacity: 0.58 mm / 72 m, while Simmons DevilBraid — 160LB Orange XL says Length: 450 m and Diameter: 0.58 mm. The diameters match, but the length labels differ. The 450 m belongs to the selected line item; 72 m is the reel’s capacity specification.

Do not describe 450 m as the amount that necessarily fitted on this reel. Nor is 72 m a measured remainder after fighting a fish: its label is Line capacity. This image helps distinguish the fields. It does not show the amount left after a particular cast or what happens to the rest of a spool when you replace the line.

Check the line item’s length, diameter and breaking strain

In the line details, Length is measured in metres and Diameter is thickness in millimetres. Load Capacity refers to the stated line strength, shown here in kilograms. These are three separate specifications. Two spools of the same length need not have the same diameter or strength.

RF4 line shop: Pure Fluorocarbon 6LB selected, Length 110 m, Diameter 0.19 mm, Load Capacity 2.7 kg
Archived FishSoft original: the second Pure Fluorocarbon 6LB row is selected. Prices, stock and specifications are a historical example of reading the fields.

The full line-item details show Pure Fluorocarbon 6LB: 110 m, 0.19 mm and 2.7 kg. Do not read 6LB in the name as 6 kg: the value labelled kg is separate. Nearby options in the same series also show 110 m, with different diameters and strengths. Check the highlighted row and the complete item name before buying.

Read capacity together with diameter

Look for capacity in the reel’s properties, not the line item’s name. The official reel guide contains the next original image; the link opens the Polish guide. The selected model lists several diameter/length pairs. Read each pair as a whole.

Jet-Series JSGHS-R in RF4: line capacity 0.22 mm / 160 m, 0.25 mm / 130 m and 0.28 mm / 107 m
Archived FishSoft original: all three diameter/length pairs belong to one selected reel. The 160 m figure is not its capacity for every line diameter.

The full reel details list Jet-Series JSGHS-R at 0.22 mm / 160 m, 0.25 mm / 130 m and 0.28 mm / 107 m. In this example, greater diameter means less length. The separate Max Drag: 9 kg field describes drag, not metres of line. Do not substitute 9 kg for capacity or apply 160 m to every diameter.

Compare both items before buying

First note the line’s full name, length, diameter and strength. Open the chosen reel and check its capacity for that diameter. If the table has no exact match, do not present your own calculation as a confirmed game specification. After fitting it, open the rod you are actually using and check the installed items again; the official guide explains assembly.

Length in metres does not replace a rig-weight check. If you change the weight, lure or rod, use our guide to rod test ranges and casting weight separately. That compares grams with the Test range. Here the question is different: which length belongs to the line and which to the reel’s capacity?

This lets you compare two specific items before spending silver. Do not choose tackle solely by kilograms or the largest number of metres. The archived images explain the fields; check today’s specifications and price in your own client. These three screens do not establish a universally safe amount of line for every fish.
