RAID 5★ Soul unusable? Check Soul type and Ascension

Perfect and Split Souls work differently, and Awakening’s red stars are capped by the Champion’s Ascension. Three checks and two original Plarium examples.

A 5★ Soul may sit in your collection without being usable on a Champion. The official Altar of Souls guide explains Awakening. Check the intended Champion, whether the item is a Perfect or Split Soul, and whether the Champion has enough Ascension. Five stars on a reward do not satisfy all three conditions.

Awakening uses a Champion’s Soul to strengthen them and unlock Blessings, which add passive Abilities and bonuses. Before choosing a high-star Soul, understand how it helps your account. Getting a Soul, getting the Champion and applying the Soul are separate steps. This guide covers application; a reward’s active rules govern how to obtain it. If you have yet to obtain a Soul, start with the three checks before using Soulstones: development goal, event reward and reserve limit.

Perfect and Split: the same stars, different steps

A Perfect Soul specifies the final Awakening Level. A suitable 5★ Perfect Soul can take a Champion to Level 5 without collecting 1★, 2★, 3★ and 4★ Souls first. A Split Soul advances existing Awakening by one step: a 5★ Split Soul requires a Champion already Awakened to 4★.

Two “5★” rewards cannot be judged by stars alone. Perfect and Split Souls imply different routes for an unawakened Champion. Read the item type and the Champion’s name first; look for Perfect Soul or Split Soul in the English interface.

Check the Champion’s purple stars

Ascension is shown with purple stars and increased using Potions in the Tavern. Rank limits the maximum Ascension but does not provide it automatically. Six Rank stars or a high ordinary Level do not mean six Ascension Levels.

Under the cited Altar rule, Awakening cannot exceed Ascension. If a Champion has only four purple stars, a 5★ Soul does not remove that cap. Check the Tavern’s Ascension tab and required Potions, then return to the Altar.

Rare, Epic, Legendary and Mythical Champions can be Awakened. A Soul belongs to a particular Champion; a similar team role or the same Faction does not make it suitable for someone else. Select the Champion at the Altar, then the matching Soul.

Why 5★ plus 1★ does not equal 6★

A Perfect Soul’s stars specify the final Level, not an added amount. If a Champion is already Awakened to 5★, a 1★ Perfect Soul is not the last missing star. Reaching 6★ requires an item permitting that transition and sufficient Ascension.

Check this before applying anything: write the current Awakening Level beside the selected Soul’s Level. Do not add them. For a Perfect Soul, compare its final Level with the current one; for a Split Soul, the current Level must be exactly one step below the item’s Level.

Three checks before applying a Soul

  1. The Soul matches this exact Champion. A Soul reward does not provide the Champion itself.
  2. The type is understood: Perfect sets a final Level; Split requires the previous Awakening Level.
  3. Ascension permits the target Level. Compare the purple stars with the intended red stars.

For a Frontier reward, separate accessing it from applying it. Our Explorer Pass and Outpost guide explains why buying a pass does not complete quests. Here the check concerns which Soul you receive and which Champion can use it.

The original rules and images were reread on 13 October 2026. If the name, type, current Awakening and Ascension all match but the action remains unavailable, save the selected Champion and Soul screens for support. “5★” alone cannot establish why an action was refused.
