Upgraded troops, no extra soldiers: two Doomsday buttons

Upgrading changes troop tier; training increases your stock. Two original screens explain the upgrade button, the minus and plus counters, and the short-timer trap.

Unlocked a new troop tier in Doomsday: Last Survivors and deciding between training new soldiers and upgrading existing ones? First establish what you lack: more soldiers or soldiers of the required tier. Those are different goals. Upgrading moves existing soldiers to another tier, while training adds new ones. An original Barracks screen makes the difference visible in two numbers.

In a 12 March 2026 discussion, a player had stopped training while waiting to unlock T5 and asked whether they should have continued preparing lower tiers. Replies quickly turned to speedups and event points. Before optimizing those, understand the button itself: what will happen to your troops when you press it?

Find upgrading on the lower-tier card

The game frame from Doomsday Diary has a T1 biker selected. A separate upward-arrows button sits at the top left, marked in red by the source author. Select the lower tier and then that button to reach upgrading. Pressing ordinary training on the lower-tier card is a different action.

After switching, check the right side: it should preview a transition between two tiers, and the bottom button should change from training to upgrading. These frames use Japanese localization. The source article was published on 5 November 2024 and does not give a client version. Use the images as a guide and verify labels in your own game.

Minus 200 here, plus 200 there

The second frame shows 200 (−200) T1 soldiers on the left and 52,899 (+200) T2 soldiers on the right. This is a preview of the selected upgrade, not a completed-operation screenshot. It shows which stock supplies the soldiers and where they will move.

Check just those two tiers. Before: 200 + 52,899 = 53,099. After completion, according to the previewed change: 0 + 53,099 = 53,099. The total is unchanged. The +200 belongs to the higher tier; it does not mean the whole army gained 200 new soldiers.

You can make that comparison without knowing Japanese: identify the starting tier, target tier and both changes. If the target differs from your goal or the quantity is unexpected, do not start the queue out of habit. Return to the selection and set the intended batch first.

Choose the action for your goal

Suppose a planned lineup needs another 1,000 soldiers. Upgrading 1,000 existing soldiers does not fill that numerical gap; it changes their tier. If you need a larger stock, compare training options. This is a hypothetical quantity example, not a recommended combat lineup.

Now consider enough soldiers overall, with some still at a lower tier when you need an already-unlocked higher tier. Upgrading serves that goal. Before using speedups, describe the result in words: add soldiers or move existing soldiers to a higher tier. That reduces the chance of spending resources on the right action for the wrong result.

If fewer soldiers are available after a battle, check your wounded separately. Barracks and the Hospital serve different purposes; upgrading a tier is not healing. Our Doomsday Hospital guide covers capacity and recovery limits.

A shorter timer does not prove a saving

The first frame selects 720 soldiers for training; the second selects 200 for upgrading. Comparing those timers alone says nothing about the cost of an equal batch. Set the same quantity, intended target tier and active bonuses, then compare the time and resources on your own screens.

Comparing train directly with train lower tiers first, then upgrade has another trap: the second route has two stages. Count both, not just the short final timer. Speeding up the last operation is not the same as shortening the whole route. Check event points against the specific phase's rules too; a forum promise of equal rewards is insufficient.

The useful check takes a few seconds: which soldiers leave one stock, which enter another and what the total becomes. Then your choice between training and upgrading no longer depends on which button merely looks more rewarding.
